TED Tuesday: Passion and patience
Are you doing what you love?

It's Tuesday, which means it's time to pass along another one of my favorite TED videos.

This week's video (warning, it contains some adult language) features Gary Vaynerchuck, who is a best-selling author as well as an expert in wine and social media. What a combo, huh?

Vaynerchuck's talk is about the two "P's:" Patience and Passion. Passion is the big one. Vaynerchuck urges us to think about what we really want to do for a living, and then be willing to put in the hard work and make the sacrifices necessary to see that vision become a reality.

On passion: "Look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, 'What do I want to do every day for the rest of my life?' Do that. I promise you can monetize that (expletive). If you love Alf, do an Alf blog. If you collect Smurfs, Smurf it up. Whatever you need to do, do it."

On patience: "I used to work in a liquor store from 7 in the morning until 10 at night for seven straight years, and the only days I took off were to watch the New York Jets. And you know what that did: It made me throw up on myself, so that wasn't a vacation. But that gave me a platform. That was a stepping stone. The reason I was able to start Wine Library Tv was because I built up this business, and it gave me the equity—the cash flow—to do it."

Give the video a look. It's about 15 minutes long, but it flies by because Vaynerchuck is a funny, energetic, charismatic guy.
